Picking a Contractor

Picking a contractor is one of the hardest parts of starting your remodeling project. You're trusting this person with your home, time, and money! Take some stress away from the decision making process by following these three tips to choose the right contractor.

Ensure They Are Licensed, Bonded, and Insured:

As bare minimum requirements, being licensed, bonded, and insured is something that all contractors you consider should have. The first thing you do should be to ask them to show documentation proving this.

license ensures the company has met requirements such as having a principal of the company pass an exam, and having liability and property damage insurance. Licensed contractors must also complete continuing education classes each year.

bond guarantees that the contractor will follow the requirements and complete the work they promised to do.

Being insured protects you from lawsuits arising out of the contract actions. It also prevents you from suffering financially should the contractor damage your property or cause injury to you or others. Capital Construction is insured for millions, meaning we will be able to protect your home no matter what happens. Typically, most contractors can only insure up to approximately $250,000.

Look For Recommendations and Reviews:

The home service industry, more than many others, is driven by recommendations and reviews. To start, asking neighbors, local insurance or real estate agents, and realtors for recommendations can help figure out where to start looking.

Furthermore, you can find reviews for businesses all across Google, Facebook, Better Business Bureau, and most company websites. Spending extra time reading reviews can help edge out one option over another, by revealing benefits and downsides that might not be stated explicitly on the contractors website.

Meet Face to Face:

Because you are trusting this person with your home, time, and money, they should be someone you have confidence in and you could see yourself getting along with. When you meet in person, the contractor should give you an estimate (Capital Construction's will always be free). A good contractor will also be able to put your mind at ease by answering any questions you have about the estimate process.
