Does hail size matter?

There are lots of different sizes of hail. It can be as small as a BB, it can get up to a ping pong ball size, or even a softball!

Whether it's the size of a dime or a baseball, there are a few circumstances that can affect how hail interacts with your property.

Typically, the BB to dime size hail isn't going to damage much of anything on your property. You may see some dings in dents in soft metals. But, your shingles on your roof will be okay.

Quarter size hail can damage your roof, but it depends on a few circumstances.

The Age of Your Roof

Asphalt shingles soften over time, meaning a single large hailstone may be able to break through if you have an older roof.

When this happens, the waterproof membrane under the shingles deteriorates faster, increasing the likelihood of leaks.

The Kind of Shingles

Hail resistant shingles are designed to withstand impacts.

We've discussed the benefits of investing in these kinds of shingles in our previous FAQ, Roof Replacement Upgrades.

How Long Did it Hail?

Did it hail for 5 seconds or 10 minutes?

Most hail storms move faster than your typical rain storm. But, if it hailed for a long period of time, no matter how large the hail was, you're going to want an inspection.

Your roof can withstand smaller hail stones because it is meant to absorb some of the impact. But, when it hails for a long time, even smaller stones can do some damage to your shingles.
